Abstract

The article specifies position of Kazakhstan in the global metal market and describes influence exerted by the mining and metallurgical industry on the macroeconomic performance of the country. The mentioned industry takes 13 % in GDP. 23 % in the total industrial production, 48 % in the processing industry production and 25 % in the export of the country. The greatest contribution to the development of the metallurgy in Kazakhstan is made by new copper deposits. In 2015–2016 KAZ Minerals put in operation two copper mining and processing projects—Bozshakol and Aktogay GOKs. Bozshakol GOK capacity is 300 Mt of ore annually, including 5 Mt of kaolinized ore and 25 Mt of sulphide ore; annual copper output in concentrate is 75 thou t for 46 years. Aktogay GOK is to produce annually 28 Mt of ore and 100 thou t of copper in concentrate over the period of 54 years. Both plants produce ore using the open pit mining method. The open pit mines are meant for the highest technical and economic indexes, which is reached owing to large resources of ore, low stripping ratio, integrated use of raw materials and non-commercial reserves. Bozshakol and Aktogay GOKs are the largest and unique in the CIS countries. Capacities of the open pit mines are comparable with the hugest surface mining projects in the world: Escondido and Chuquicanata, Chili; Bingham, USА; SuperPit, Australia; Grasberg, Indonesia; Muruntau, Uzbekistan. Currently the open pit mines use cycling operation technology with motor haulage of overburden and ore. It is scheduled for the nearest future to transfer to the cyclical-and-continuous method with conveyor hoist of preliminary crushed overburden and ore.
