The growth of industrial production is inextricably linked with the deterioration of the environment due to man-made load and with the inevitable depletion of natural resources, which can be a threat to the environmental safety and sustainable development of enterprises and regions. In these conditions, the issues of formation of a new management culture aimed at compliance with the principles of eco-efficiency in improving economic growth become urgent. The solution to the problem is the introduction of an environmental management system (environmentally oriented management system), the appearance of which is associated with the activities of the UN Commission in the field of environmental protection. The principal difference between environmental management and traditional environmental management is its independent, initiative, voluntary implementation, due to the requirements of the world market. To date, there is a weak interest of Russian enterprises in the introduction of the environmental management system (EMS). The tightening of the legal framework also does not solve problems connected with the environmental pollution. One of the reasons that complicate EMS introduction at Russian enterprises is the lack of a unified methodology for assessing the economic effectiveness of the system. The paper proposes to assess the effectiveness of the environmental management implementation based on the identified dynamics of the main quantitative indicators of environmental activity at an enterprise for 5 years in the priority areas of EMS. The environmental management system at an enterprise is considered to be quite effective if the positive dynamics of indicators in all aspects of its environmental activity is confirmed.
