Chernye Metally
The 7th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the actual metallurgical news from different countries and news of metallurgical companies.
The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is devoted to the 50th anniversary of "Materials Technology" Chair of the Volgograd State Technical University. The first publication by the head of this chair N. A. Zyuban describes the history and development of this chair, its current state and prospects.
The paper "Forged ingots: quality problems and new approaches" by N. A. Zyuban, D. V. Rutskiy, S. B. Gamanyuk, S. S. Konovalov presents trends of the modern level of development of production of large forged ingots for responsible large-size products in different industries, as well as analysis of the main directions of improvement of the quality of such metal products on the base of the research work carried out at the chair "Materials Technology" of Volgograd State Technical University.
It seems that the article by I. L. Gonik, N. A. Zyuban, N. A. Novitskiy will be rather interesting for the readership. It describes the study of the physical properties of briquetted charge material - oxide coal briquette. The main purpose of research is to find the submitted values of thermal conductivity at various temperatures of briquette heating. The results of experiments have displayed that thermal conductivity ratio of oxide-carbon briquettes that have been subjected to only drying at 200 °С is lower than thermal conductivity ratio of rolling scale (the main briquette component), due to porous structure of briquettes.
The section is finished by the paper "Study of metal defects of side frame for a freight car" by L. V. Palatkina, N. A. Zyuban, Yu. V. Grebmev, O. V. Polyakova. The article observes the results of the analysis of defects of a responsible detail of freight cars - a side frame - in the process of their operation. It is concluded that 85 % of the cases of removal of side frames from operation during technical maintenance of trains is connected with manufacturing defects located outside the areas of mandatory non-destructive testing.
"Iron and steel making" section is presented by the publication "New plasma-heated ladle furnace for secondary metallurgical tasks at Dörrenberg Edelstahl" by M. Kühnemund, A. Hauck, W. Schmitz. It describes describes the successful use of plasma heating as an alternative heating method offering essential advantages especially for small treatment units. Another outstanding technical benefit is that it eliminates the time-related carburization effect that is an inevitable characteristic of conventional ladle heating systems.
The section "Rolling production" is opened by the paper "Novel method for setting the mechanical and topographic properties of strips within one process step" by the international collective of specialists from Germany, Spain and Portugal. The authors observed development of an innovative strip finishing procedure by combining tension levelling and skin pass rolling into one production step and thus to shorten the process chain. It could be proved that the mechanical characteristics of strip material mainly adjusted during the skin pass rolling process are possible to be achieved as well during a pure tension leveling process by variation of applied tension and bending load.
Another paper in this section is presented by G. Schwich, J. Seitz and G. Hirt from RWTH Aachen (Institut für Bildsame Formgebung) as well as by V. Jenkouk from the University of Cambridge. This paper shows how nowadays the process design and optimization can be efficiently supported by simulation methods. Schematic diagram of the axial profiling displays ring rolling operating steps, including positioning of the laser measuring system. Hence the definition of new ring rolling strategies it is possible even to provide advanced geometries, sufficient quality level and manufacture of shapes that could not be produced before with repeatable results.
The section "Heat treatment and surface coating" contains the article "Heat treatment at high level of the process comprehension" by F. Brühl and T. Sagermann from SMS Siemag AG. It describes the examples of this approach for thermal technological equipment as a new business direction for SMS Siemag AG, i.e vertical furnaces for continuous annealing and galvanizing, furnaces in strip coating lines, heat treatment furnaces for heavy plates, compact strip production (CSP) units of last generation. SMS Siemag is one of such successful companies; at first it united mechanical and electrical packages (mechatronics), and then started to add also thermal equipment in scopes of supply.
The paper "Wind power from the blast furnace: saving resources in ironmaking " by K. Rose, W. Kriete, M. Hansen is published in the section "Power engineering and ecology". It is devoted to the putting into practice of the top gas pressure recovery turbine at blast furnace B in April 2012 after a realization time of only 20 months by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in order to provide energy-efficient ironmaking.It is mentioned that Z & J Technologies company (that has designed and constructed this turbine) plans in the future not only manufacture such turbines, but also to operate them with essential saving of capital expenses.
