In 2013 the Ukrainian Scientific-Research Mining Institute will celebrate its 80th anniversary. The paper describes strengthening and development of the institute since its foundation till today. The main directions and results of scientific and research activity of the institute specialists are shown. The investigations of ore fields structures at iron ore deposits have been conducted by the scientists during different years, the effective technologies for development of these deposits have been created, the system of block forced caving with ore breaking via deep holes has been developed and successfully put into practice. In addition, wide studies in mechanization of mining operations have been undertaken. As a result, there were developed machine-tools for hole drilling in ores with different strength, breaking and loading machines for manganese ore mines, sinking conveyors, belt elevators for sinking of mine opening etc.
Studies for examination of mining pressure were very important. Theoretical grounds of centrifugal simulation using equivalent materials, methods for estimation of stress state of rock massif and stability calculation for geometrical parameters of structural components in development systems as well as new kinds of timbering have been developed for the first time in the Soviet Union.
The large complex of works aimed on creation of a mine with new technical-economical level (a mine of future) has been executed. Theoretical base and methods of managing seismic effect of explosion have been proposed, seismic-safe technology of large-scale explosions has been developed and put into operation.
Recently the institute works in such conventional directions of activity as geological-economical evaluation of deposits using computer-aided geological and geological-economical models, creation of power-saving technologies in the mining and metallurgical industrial complex, opencast and underground mining of deposits, development of efficient and safe methods of mass explosions using new explosives and methods of calculation of parameters of drilling and blasting works. Designing group for scientific accompanying of the research investigations has been established.
