Quality control of production processes with high step frequencies is a serious challenge for many industrial branches. Wire or tubes that are manufactured e.g. for application in medicine, telecommunications, automotive and aircraft industries, should meet the requirements of high quality standards. Ideal surface of these products that is to be provided with very high productivity is considered as one of the most important requirements. The Fraunhofer Institute of Physical Measuring Technics IPM has developed the in-line control system that guarantees 100% control of wire production. Four high-speed so-called CNN cameras provide operation with 40,000 pics per second. The applied CNN integrated microscheme consists of 176×144 separate elements that can be connected with eight neighbour elements.
