The Republic of Kazakhstan as a large mining country pays much attention to training of highly qualified specialists for mining industry. Since 2004 such specialists are offered the three-stage training system: Bachelor–Master–PhD (specialization). Higher education is supported under the governmental grants and commercial contracts with business undertakings and physical bodies, and is carried out in the Kazakh, Russian and English languages. Classifier of Kazakhstan’s mining industry specialties offers two Bachelor’s qualifications in Mining and Process Machines and Equipment (per Branches) while for Masters and Doctors the areas of Mining and Surveying are given separately. The Bachelor’s curriculum is composed of three blocks of educational, basic and major disciplines, out of which there are 33% of compulsory and 67% of disciplines are selective. This percentages is 27:75 for Masters and 20:80 for Doctors. The selective disciplines are defined by a university with regard to the specificity of socio-economic development in a region, labor market demands, existing schools and individual interests of students. There are two areas of Master’s education – science and pedagogy with the set time limit of 2 years and the area of expertise with the set time limit of 1.5 years of training. The latter is intended to prepare highly qualified executive personnel. Graduates of the science and pedagogy areas of Masters prepare Master’s dissertation and the profession education graduates prepare Master’s projects. Doctors are also educated in the areas of philosophy (PhD) and profession. After the dissertation theme is approved, future doctors are provided with two scientific consultants, one being the scientist of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the other being a foreign scientific man. There areas of expertise should be similar to the doctor’s dissertation theme. Doctoral students must pass probation at the leading foreign universities. Students, candidates for Master’s degree and doctoral students accomplish research connected with the current problems in mining. The academic curriculums include practical training at the first-rank mining companies of the country.
