PSImetals and Gerdau jointly delivered a full-scale system in half the time of a typical project of a similar size and complexity. The growing partnership between PSImetals and Gerdau is a success factor. Both companies are united in the fact that any improvement in the process is a chance to increase competitiveness in a very difficult market situation. The following factors were of decisive importance: the use of the industry standard for production management in metallurgy; following the design methodology focused on the maximum use of the standard; the use of opportunities for adaptation and configuration of software to eliminate the inconsistencies identified in the solution. The new project implementation approach developed by PSI Metals, the product-oriented design methodology, enabled successfully to implement the production management system for six months on the Gerdau company plate mill in Brazil. This project shows that three aspects are crucial for success: the product, the project methodology, the willingness and motivation of project partners.
