MGRI’s Hydrogeological Faculty named after V. M. Shvets has a rich history beginning in 1920 when the hydrogeological specialization was originated at the Moscow Mining Academy. The founder of that school was Octavii K. Lange who laid the foundation for the development of hydrogeology in Russia. In the 1930s the Faculty divided into the faculties of hydrology and engineering geology, which governed the further development of both scientific schools. Many distinguished scientific men contributed to establishing the Faculty: Mikhail V. Sergeev who did research on mineral water, Fedor P. Savarensky, the developer of groundwater theory, and Grigori N. Kamensky, the founder of the science of groundwater dynamics. The fundamental principles of hydrogeological research were established under their leadership. During the Great Patriotic War, fellow workers of the Faculty participated actively in operation of military geological parties and provided geological supervision of warfare, including compilation of special maps, exploration of water sources and water supply of troops. The post-war period inaugurated new achievements. Irina K. Gavich established a new school in hydrogeology—modeling of hydrogeological processes. Under Irina’s guidance, the school prepared many specialists. Alexander M. Ovchinnikov made a major contribution to mineral water research and hydrochemistry development. The time between 1953 and 1991 featured dynamic advancement of the Faculty. A new specialty—radio hydrogeology—appeared, and scientific research expanded. Petr P. Klimentov and Vladimir M. Shvets, who was the head of the Faculty for 40 years, greatly strengthened position of the Faculty in the scientific society. The present-day scope of investigation performed by the Faculty embraces a wide range of research areas, from migration of oil-products with groundwater to the analyzes of mineralized brines. Emphasis is laid on groundwater monitoring and hydrodynamic modeling methods. The Faculty carries on active cooperation with scientific and production agencies such as GIDEK, GEOINK-CONSULTING and Darsi LLC. This cooperation allows students to get hands-on experience and participate in topical research. A critical trend of today is the hydrogeological analysis of the permafrost area. Specialists in this sphere are in demand at companies operating in permafrost regions. Educational activities of the Faculty involve training of specialists of all levels, from bachelors to post-graduates. Practical training is carried out at modern training sites, including Sergiev Posad and Crimea. Thus and so, the Hydrogeological Faculty at MGRI has come a long way of progress, keeping the scientific traditions and expanding the areas of research. The Faculty remains a leading center of specialist training in the sphere of hydrogeology and fruitfully integrates the educational and research activities. |
