Chernye Metally

The 6th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the actual metallurgical news from different countries.

The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is presented by several articles from Magnitogorsk State Technical University in connection with its 80th anniversary. The first publication by the rector V. M. Kolokoltsev describes the history and development of this university, itc current state and prospects.

The paper by M. A. Polyakova and G. Sh. Rubin "Modern direction of development of scientific standardization" presents analysis of the current state of standardization in the conditions of absence of its scientific basis and justifies the use of function-oriented method for identifying relations between customer requirements and product properties.

It seems that the article by M. P. Baryshnikov and E. B. Medvedev will be rather interesting for the readership. It is devoted to change of the thickness of an outer layer of a bimetal rod end produced by direct cold extrusion of cross-layered bimetal ingots. It is demonstrated that an external layer with a thickness smaller than that of the lower cross layer of the initial billet at certain values of the thickness of the bottom cross layer of the initial billet.

D. I. Kinzin in the last paper of this section examines practical approbation of deformation efficiency rise will result in roll pass design for 16 stands instead of 18 stands at the 370 mill of Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works without increase of equipment load. It will be possible also to solve more complicated tasks, to vary geometrical parameters of all rolling passes and grooves for rolling of the required shapes.

"Iron and steel making" section is presented by the publication "Balancing and behaviour of chlorine in the blast furnace process at Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann" by H. Bartusch, T. Hauck, H.-G. Grabietz. They discuss main chlorine inputs and the behaviour of chlorine within the blast furnace process and suggest the ways for the handling of chlorine in the process. It is shown that the origin of the hydrochloric acid in the top gas are chlorine compounds which are charged mainly as alkali chlorides to the furnace by the material flows of coal, coke and sinter.

The paper "Surface inspection systems - requirements for future system generations" is prepared by the authors from ThyssenKrupp, voestalpine Stahl, Tata Steel, Salzgitter Flachstahl and two VDEh institutes. They confirmed that detection and documentation of surface defects in the production of steel strip is crucial to deliver a high quality product to the customer and essential for the optimization of production processes through direct conclusion on the origin of the error. For this reason Surface Inspection Systems (SIS) are used by all the leading steel producers in various stages of their production.

High-strength steel strips and sheets should be subjected to cleaning after rolling and consequent heat treatment, before their coiling. Processing of strips and sheets in acid solution allows to delete surface contamination. Multiple parameters, such as acid dosing and its distribution along strip surface, should be controlled permanently, ant it is a task for reliable visualizing software. It is the subject of the paper by D. Wagner from Siemens AG.

The section "Power engineering and ecology" is opened by the article "Energy recycling with usage of shiftable heating tunnel in continuous heating furnaces" by C. Grapengiesser. Among the main obstacles for realization of the projects for usage of waste gases heat, possible delays of production processes and insufficient economical expedience can be mentioned. However, these conclusions don't relate to very efficient shiftable heating tunnels that are heated with waste gases; they provide ideal opportunity for cutting heat losses and harmful СО2 emissions.

J. Mellentin from SMS Siemag discusses the problem of electric energy consumption at an iron and steel works that can be compared with requirements of a small town. It is shown that the control of energy flows and optimization of production expenses are necessary methods for correspondence to arising additional challenges in the field of environmental safety and Energy Advisor software system developed by SMS Siemag AG can be the base for this approach.

The issue also includes the sections "Economics and finances", "Steel as material" and "Metallurgical history".
