Chernye Metally
The 8th issue of "Chernye Metally" journal (2014) is opened by with the actual metallurgical news from different countries and news of metallurgical companies.
The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS countries" is opened by the paper "Comparative analysis of alternative solutions of mould oscillation for continuous casters" by I. F. Goncharevich and G. N. Elanskiy. The paper presents discussion about modernization of the existing continuous casters with moulds operating in the mode of harmonic oscillations. It is suggested that the mode of biharmonic oscillations can be taken as alternative variant for harmonic mode of oscillations.
Another article in this section - "Study of thermal state of steel ladles based on the computer implemented model" is presented by the specialists from the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine. The mathematical model for non-stationaryheat transferthrough themultilayerlining has been developed; it allowsto calculate heat lossesthrough the wallsandbottom of the ladle, as well as heat lossesby radiationfrom the melt surface. Computerimplementedmodel, consisting of threesubsystemscalculatingheat release from the melt surfaceandheat transferthrough the wallandbottom of the ladle, has been also developed.
This section is finalized by publication about ship-building steels of HY series (E. A. Chernyshov, A. D. Romanov, E. A. Romanova from Nizhniy Novgorod State Technical University). Information about the steels of HY series, their chemical composition, mechanical properties, technology of production, heat treatment and welding modes is provided in the article. The review displays that possibilities of improving the properties of construction steels only via their alloying are finished practically and at present time this direction is not expedient.
The section "Rolling production" is opened by the paper "New type of HSS work roll for later stands in hot strip mill finishing trains" by the specialists of Hitachi Corporation from Japan and German affiliate. Combined with more than two times of wear resistance compared with E-ICDP (ICDP enhanced with MC-type carbide), this new type of HSS roll is expected to be used for more than twice the amount of rolling as E-ICDP in the later stands, contributing to production increase, labour saving and higher productivity for hot strip mill production. From laboratory evaluation, it can be concludedthat the new type of HSS roll is expected o show more than twice the wear resistance and same level of crack resistance as E-ICDP, which is the target of the development.
Infrared pyrometers with contact-free and quick registration of measurement results are ideally suitable for temperature measuring during induction heating. In this case operator can choose between the two measuring methods: using one wave or two waves. The paper "Technological methods of temperature measuring during induction heating" by A. Book from Keller HCW GmbH observes differences between these two methods from the point of view of measuring techniques, optical aspects, maintenance of sensors and their influence on measurement quality.
The section "Power engineering and ecology" contains the article "Air quality standards are not achieved yet" by A. Schwarz from Verlad Stahleisen. It describes discussion in the framework of the round table "Steel" held by Dr. Gunnar Still, corporate advisor on environment protection at ThyssenKrupp AG and New directives from Brussels regarding air basin protection.
The paper "Possibilities and limits for lowering of harmful CO2 emissions in Europe in steel production and application" by H.B. Lüngen presents the review about the conference discussing possibilities of substantial lowering the carbon dioxide emissions, according to the regulations of European Commission. The real possible limit of lowering of CO2 emissions in the iron and steel industry and power engineering has been analyzed based on up-to-date parameters of blast furnace practice.
The issue also includes the historical article by E.S. Tarakanova, devoted to 225th anniversary of Votkinsk works and based on exponats from St. Petersburg State Mining Museum.
