A selection of the related articles dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the chair of Pyrometallurgical Processes of the South Ural State University (SUSU) opens the eighth issue of the «Ferrous Metals» journal. The authors present the achievements of the SUSU pyrometallurgical scientific school in the theory and practice of steelmaking, and also propose a pyrometallurgical processing scheme for lumpy sideroplesite ore in rotary kilns to produce a composite metal oxide material. The publication devoted to the development of a method for verifying the methodology for calculating the true number of inclusions in a metal sample based on data observed on the grinding surface is also of interest.

In the section "Foundry and continuous casting" the article devoted to the development of a technological sample for determining the amount of burning-in which enables to reproduce real conditions for interaction of the mold surface with the melt at the usage of several non-stick coatings simultaneously. Foreign specialists present the technology for soft reduction of a continuous cast billet which provides an effective decrease in the axial segregation degree through example of 100Cr6, 42CrMoS4 and C4C grades.

The most representative in the issue is the «Production of pipes» section. JSC RosNITI specialists present the development of new mathematical models for the process of metal gripping by rolls which enables to improve the rolling technology at modern continuous elongating rolling mills, and also determine and scientifically substantiate drawing process optimal parameters of a stable flow in twin dies. Representatives of JSC PNTZ and Ural Federal University consider the issue of the measurement results distortion of the extra-thin-walled pipes outer diameter because of their elastic deformation through the micrometer measuring force. The Vallourec specialists` publication is devoted to the commissioning of a new high-efficiency piercing mill which has the optimal equipment mix for fast, economical and high-quality production of seamless hot-rolled steel pipes. NITU MISiS authors consider the wear characteristics of the helical rolling mills working tool during piercing high-temperature alloys. There is in the section the publication dedicated to the innovative technology for production of seamless large diameter tubes from continuously cast billets at the JSC "Chelyabinsk Tube Rolling Plant".
