January 2020 Issue of Mining Journal is devoted to the theoretical, applied and experimental geomechanics.
The known fact is that geological conditions are steadily complicating in the course of mineral mining, and the content of useful minerals is decreasing while the demand for metals is growing. Naturally, miners have to access increasingly deeper subsurface levels and on a larger scale, which aggrandizes risk of instability of underground openings in mines. Forthisreason, any modern mine necessarily has a staff of experts in geomechanics and geotechnology. The international practice shows that high experience level of geotechnical engineers in modern geomechanics and the mine management being conscious of the importance of geotechnology enables the well-thought out and long-run decision-making, which improves production profitability and enhances safety of personnel and operation.
This issue offers articles prepared by chief executive officers, leading experts and researchers from mining companies, institutions and agencies, as well as consulting companies in mining. The articles present the research findings on physical and mechanical properties of rocks, their fracture mechanisms, influence of faults on seismicity of rock masses, displacements and deformation of rocks at the boundaries of underground excavations, identification of higher rock pressure zones in rockburst-hazardous deposits, development of prediction methodology of high-stress and geodynamically hazardous zones in rock masses, etc.
