Tsvetnye Metally
The opening publication of the August issue of Tsvetnye Metally includes a review of the international non-ferrous metals market (based on the July 2020 data).
This issue contains some selected articles authored by Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company. The authors describe the changes that took place in the company following major revamping. Thus, the papers cover the issues of environmental and economical safety.
One of the papers published in the Light Metals, Carbon Materials section describes the results of experimental studies that looked at the formation rate and properties of cryolite-alumina crusts in electrolytic cells. The obtained results can be used to calculate the heat losses occurring in cells through the cryolite-alumina crust. The process personnel can use these data to analyze the cell response to a different type of alumina.
The Composites and Multipurpose Coatings section features an article entitled as follows: Study of polycrystalline diamonds produced by infiltration method using natural and synthetic diamond powders. The authors describe a research project conducted to better understand the key physical and mechanical properties of PCD composites. The composite materials were produced by infiltration method using two binding materials (Ni – Si and Mn – Si alloys) and two diamond powders (the ASM grade of synthetic powder and the AM grade of natural powder). A comparative analysis of theproperties of the composites was also carried out.
The article “Reactive phase formation during electrospark treatment of the EP741NP alloy with fusible Al – Si electrode” published in the Metal Processing section describes a trial which tested a technique for producing homogenous fusible electrodes by melt quenching and electrospark treatment. These processes ensure surface hardening and smoothing of the nickel alloy EP741NP. It was found that high-frequency electrospark treatment with shorter pulse discharges leads to reactionless mass transfer of the ductile FCC Al-based solid solution resulting in a complete wear of the modified layers during tribotesting.
