Tsvetnye Metally



2020 marked the 60th anniversary of the Samara Metallurgical Plant (SMZ). This issue features three articles authored by the SMZ employees, which examine the structure and the properties of aluminium alloys resulting from their inoculation with transition metals and hafnium and from friction stir welding with weld seam cooling.


Please, note the paper authored by S. I. Korneev published in the Economics and Management of Production section. The author considers the streaming agreements between Vale and the streaming companies Wheaton Precious Metals Corporation and Сobalt 27 aimed at raising funds for developing the Voisey’s Bay nickel-copper-cobalt mine. A relatively recent type of deals in mining industry, streaming agreements define the aspiration of upfront paying investors to not just guarantee the production but to also get a thorough insight in the economics of mining, which in the long run should enable a more accurate forecasting of the product marginality and saleability.


Of interest is an article published in the Rare Metals, Semiconductors section with the following title: Metallothermal synthesis of the Laves phase TaCr2 from oxide raw materials. The authors established that a Laves phase TaCr2 with a melting point of 2020 oCcan be synthesized as a result of metallothermic reduction of Cr2O3 and Ta2O5 with calcium hydride for the duration of 6 hours. The resultant powders have the desired chemical composition irrespective of the excessive amount of the reducing agent.
