Tsvetnye Metally

The February issue of Tsvetnye Metally features a series of articles contributed by R&D Centre for Hydrometallurgy LLC in Saint Petersburg and thus is a continuation of Issue No. 9 of Tsvetnye Metally for 2020 that put the Saint Petersburg Metallurgy School in the spotlight. The papers look at the role of mineralogical studies (process mineralogy) in the process of developing and proving the feasibility of hydrometallurgical techniques for leaching gold from sulphide concentrates; describe a system that simulates the autoclave operator workplace and that was specially developed for the Pokrovskiy POX Hub; describe some efficient and sustainable final product analysis techniques.

Of high interest is the historical information about the 50 Kopecks silver coins made by metallurgist and Saint Petersburg Mining University graduate Petr Latyshev. The paper is included in the Materials Science section and tells about Latyshev’s participation in the production of the first Soviet silver coins in the 1920s. The authors used the modern lab equipment available at the Saint Petersburg Mining University to study the chemical and structural characteristics of the alloys used to make coins. This gives a better insight into the production of such coins.

Despite the harsh conditions of the pandemic, the annual international conference Plaksin Readings 2020 did take place last autumn, if not in a regular format. This issue contains a brief overview of the reports presented at the conference.
