In February 2012, the Institute of Mining of Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, leader of the Ural mining engineering science, marks the 50th anniversary. January issue of the “Gornyi Zhurnal” is dedicated to this significant event.
Articles of the issue cover topics on such areas of research activities of the Institute, as exploration and multipurpose utilization of mineral resources of the Ural region, study of geomechanical and geodynamic processes, mining deep-seated deposits, blasting, open-cast transport, ventilation and gas and dust suppression in deep pits, risk of accidents and disasters forecasting and reduction in the subsoil usage applying the advanced methods of exploration.
The issue is opened by the article of A. G. Belova and S. A. Kornilkov, which describes the "Solid Minerals" technology platform (SM TP), established upon an initiative of the leading mining institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences as an instrument of the private-public partnership in the field of innovation development of mining and metallurgical complex of the country. The paper represents the organizational structure, goals, objectives, and the initial stages of operation of the SM TP project. As an example, it is highlighted the activities of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the sphere of innovative technologies design and development.

Kornilkov, Director of the Institute of Miningof Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences informs about activities of the establishment through the whole period of its existence, outlines results of fundamental and applied research engineering, as well as states goals and objectives for further study in the field of mining.
