Chernye Metally

The section "Development of metallurgy in Russia and CIS" is opened by publication "Scope of equipment and basic designing solutions for dosing systems and systems for charging bulky materials in up-to-date electric steelmaking shops" by A. Protasov and I. Komolov. Combined schemes of feeding alloying and slag-forming materials has been developed by VNIImetmash institute for several enterprises: Norilsk Mining and metallurgical Works, Moldova Metallurgical Works and Casting-Rolling Plant in Yartsevo. It is concluded that additional measures for protection of electric equipment from furnace heat radiation and for protection of weighing measuring devices from mechanical effect of materials and vibration are strictly required.

Another article in this section is devoted to study of influence of solidification conditions on crack forming in continuously cast billets and is prepared by V. Ulyanov and V. Gushchin from Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University. It was revealed that usage of free-flow pouring nozzle of new design allowed to decrease substantially heterogeneity of solidification front, thermal stresses in crust and to increase qualitative parameters of cast metal. Obtained results testified that number of strips of thready pickling ability lowered and number surfacial cracks decreased by 2-3 times compared with direct casting and by 1.4-1.8 times compared with casting through free-flow pouring nozzle of conventional design (for billets 180x530 mm from 45 and U8 steels).

IMC Montan and DMT companies presented their new technologies of desulfurizing of coke gas (wet oxidation and absorption-desorption technologies). It is shown that absorption-desorption technologies of of desulfurizing of coke gas (such as vacuum-carbonate and ASK technologies) have rather sufficient economical efficiency and are characterized with high environment protection potential. At the same time, Stratford method and sulfate ammonium technology are high-effective but also more expensive.

J. T. Marins and his colleagues described the main characteristics of the blast furnace No. 1 at ThyssenKrupp CSA in Brazil, the main stages during commissioning, from basic design until blow-in. Technical data of the blast furnace and burner positioning for the heating-up are presented, as well as evolution of daily fuel rate, silicon content in hot metal and daily hot metal production. Heating-up curves of the blast furnace are analyzed.

H. B. Lüngen examined stable development via alternative production of iron ore and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in comparison with blast furnace practice, direct reduction and reduction melting. The new version of blast furnace process includes return of blast furnace gas and it allowed to cut carbon emissions by 25 % (based on experimental results).

The paper by G. Krause presents a report about Stahl 2011 annual German national metallurgical conference. Where is now the German iron and steel industry from the point of view of international competitiveness? Possibilities and hazards are analyzed by the leading experts - metallurgists, economists, politicians.

The section "Designing, erection and development of metallurgical enterprises" includes two papers: "Challenges during the construction of the new ThyssenKrupp CSA steel mill complex" by T. Schuhmacher and "Optimization of technologies and equipment for efficiency rise of steel production" by U. Ratzek. Putting into practice the new facilities in Brazil and Germany are observed.

The issue contains the economical articles describing experience and prospects of such companies as Danieli, SMS Group and ArcelorMittal.
