Abstract |
This article is devoted to modern investigations of magnesium and casting aluminum alloys, which are carried out by specialists of All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials “VIAM”. Academician I. N. Fridlyander made the foundations of all the reviewing investigations. These foundations were developed thanks to his active guidance and direct participation. Casting aluminium alloys have a strong place among the construction materials due to the combination of high specific strength, corrosion resistance and good processability. These alloys are widely used in various fields of mechanical engineering. Nowadays, magnesium alloys cause a special interest of aviation and space engineering designers. Over the last 15–20 years, the world production of primary magnesium has been almost doubled and reached 500–550 thousand tons per year. Magnesium alloys are not only the lightest structural metals, but also the only competitors of engineering plastics by weight characteristics, having a significant advantages. The main advantages of magnesium alloys are small density (1800–1900 kg/m3), high specific strength, rigidity and vibration resistance. These advantages make it possible to use the cast and wrought details in the construction of aerospace and military equipment, satellite systems, energetic and gas-pumping installations, optical devices, etc. Considering the fact, that magnesium alloys are 1.5 times lighter than aluminium alloys and 4 times lighter than steel and cast iron, their application gives the decreasing of weight characteristics of the products by 25–30%. The certain part of this article is devoted to achievements of young specialists of All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials “VIAM”. These specialists were the students of аcademician I. N. Fridlyander in the beginning of 2000. Many of these students became scientists. Nowadays, they continue the researches of light alloys. |
