Abstract | The features of usage the concept of sustainable development in iron and steel industry is discussed in the paper. This concept has been suggested by WCED UN International Commission under heading of Mrs. Brundtland, former Norwegian Prime minister, for analysis of the processes of human and environment interface in industrial production conditions. This commission has chosen three main components of industrial sustainable development — ecological, social and economical. However, this list does not contain power engineering component that seems to be unacceptable at present time, especially under consideration of high-temperature metallurgical processes. It should be also taken into account that metallurgical processes connected with large amount of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions are used as subjects of this analysis. It is shown that sustainability of these processes can be considered on the base of three "E" paradigm — Energy, Ecology and Economics. Principal difference of the structure of thermal balances of basic oxygen and electric arc steelmaking processes are noted in the article. High efficiency of wide ap-plication of alternative energy carriers in electric arc steelmaking is shown based on presented calculations. The algorithm of calculation of CO2 greenhouse gas emission is proposed on the base of power intensity of steel products. The results of calculation of annual CO2 greenhouse gas emission for different Russian steel-making works are presented; they are also compared with similar parameters of the German industry. |
