The paper presents the famous way of Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works since its establishment on June 25, 1940. The role of the works during the WWII is described, especially production of armoured steel plates. In the following period the production facilities for rails, railroad wheels, special shapes, tube billets and structural steel have been put into practice, Development of the new technology for processing of vanadium-bearing titanium-magnetite ores from Kachkanar deposit was the important step for improvement of quality and expanding of steel grade range, together with fabrication of vanadium slag. Putting into operation of the largest worldwide universal beam mill in 1977 allowed to manufacture wide H-beams and columns with parallel flanges, the unique products in the USSR at that time. The current program of reconstruction and development of Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works is considered and estimated. Starting of work of the pulverized coal unit in 2012 is a good example of realization of this program.
