Experience of unconventional materials in biological reclamation
of diamond dumps |
Abstract |
Biological reclamation of dumps in Yakutia is related with a number of difficulties: thin fertile soil layer, nearly complete infertility of dumped rocks, extreme low temperature in winter. Under such conditions, it was required to find an efficient substitute for fertile substances to cover the surface of dumps to be reclaimed. As a substitute, old grass from valleys of local rivers was used. The experiment was carried out by the Institute of Applied Ecology of the North, North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk, Russia. Efficiency of the local grass was compared with other coatings: humus and sand mix, horse manure, bacterial pulp and others. Before coating, the test grounds were grassed and fertilized. The process of grassing was observed for two years. Finally, the doubtless advantages of the local herb were disclosed: average grassing density made 50 % (80 % in some areas), grass height was 45 cm, the herb composition was replenished with new 17 species. These characteristics are much better than the performance of other coatings. The method of biological reclamation using local old grass has been protected by RF patent. |
