Abstract | The main drives of hot rolling mills can be characterized as one of the largest and most loaded drives in metallurgy and machinebuilding. The tendency at steel markets indicates on development of the direction of high-strength rolled materials; as a result, the requirements to the components of rolling mill drives are getting higher. SMS Group in this work has analyzed the mechanical and electrical components of the existing drive mechanisms and has determined the innovative solutions to provide powerful and reliable drive system. The operating experience of the 2040 hot rolling mill at ArcelorMittal Dunkirk integrated iron and steel works is used. This rolling mill consists of five roughing stands, seven finishing stands and three coiling units. Analysis of modernization strategy has displayed the clear understanding of its features and made the base of specification of the new drive systems. It is shown that individual “taylor-made” concept can be found for drive mechanisms. SMS Group has manufactured all equipment at its Hilchenbach works and then delivered it to Dunkirk. Such route provides high reliability of modernization and consequent operation. |
