Abstract

Hydropower engineering is one of the popular and successfully used sources of energy for almost 200 years by now. Recently, the interest in this kind of energy has largely grown in view of the aggravating situation concerned with organic fuel—limited reserves, higher costs and stringent environmental standards. The Kyrgyz Republic possesses huge water resources to fruitfully develop hydropower engineering. Based on the analysis of data on the potential of water resources and greenhouse gas emissions in the country, the article considers the issues of energy security with allowance for the global climate fluctuations and growth of production capacities. In accordance with the National Strategy of Sustainable Development in the Kyrgyz Republic up to 2030, the scope of the discussion embraces two development scenarios in the industry—basic and optimistic. The basic scenario provides for construction of a number of large hydroelectric plants, while the optimistic scenario is based on commissioning of a few small hydroelectric installations and thermal plants. In either case, hydropower engineering should develop both in the line of integrated management of water resources and inclusive of addressing a wide range of social, economic and environmental issues.
