Abstract | The most modern stainless steel plant in the western hemisphere was built in 2011 and 2012 and was commissioned at the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013. The project connects the stainless capabilities of two leading industrial companies in the field of steel production. The result is a production line of the latest available technology for the production of stainless flat products based on the highest standards in terms of industrial engineering, IT technology and sustainability. The new steel plant was built in the USA in Calvert, Alabama. With the rampup of the melt shop in Calvert the final phase of the project, the operation of an integrated steel mill for stainless steel flat products in the US supplying the Nafta market, was achieved. With the setup of the plant a competitive cost position of the production of stainless steel flat products has finally been reached. The mill is the most modern integrated plant in the US. Due to the intensive know-how within the Outokumpu group, the short operation cycles and the broad product portfolio served out of Calvert and San Luis de Potosi, Outokumpu Stainless USA is now in the position to follow the market development and participate in the growth perspectives coming out of the Nafta market. |
