Abstract

Metrostroi LTD, Saint-Petersburg, widely applies tunneling machines and equipment with cutting-type heads in construction of subway tunnels and stations. Engineering of improved tunneling machines equipped with advanced cutter heads, ensuring high production output at low energy consumption in main and auxiliary tunnel driving can be implemented based on the data of theoretical and experimental research of rock failure process. The specialists of the Chair of Mining Engineering at the Saint-Petersburg Mining University have analyzed failure of Cambrian clay under cutting in order to substantiate rational design parameters for cutter heads of tunneling machines. The integrated research approach includes analysis of basic provisions of rock failure mechanics, computational experimentation and verification of experimental results on a test bench. The research shows that cutting of Cambrian clay consumes much energy as clay possesses high viscosity. The deteriorative factors for the cutting efficiency are high water content and adherence of clay to cutter head (gumming of cutter bits). Based on the analysis of the behavior of force and energy performance of cutting during the computation and laboratory experimentation, the conclusion has been drawn that it is rational to cut clay by thin slices at a high cutting velocity.
