Abstract | Three centuries ago, on 24 January 1718, the Russian Emperor Peter the Great issued his first decree on mintage. Both Russian mining-metallurgical branch and mintage have long histories and are strongly interconnected. Before 1917, mintage in Russia was under the competence of Department of Mining and Production of Salt, while most of Mint’s workers and managers were graduates of the Mining Institute. Thanks to their knowledge and skills, the Saint Petersburg Mint had established a reputation as a leading and high-technological enterprise. Continuing the famous traditions of the first technological university in Russia, the scientists-metallurgists from the Saint Petersburg Mining University undertook a large investigation on several coin samples in order to define the technological characteristics of their production. Collectors’ coins of different values were researched. The characteristics of mintage of first Russian coins were analysed. The obtained data allow us to understand the historical development of mintage and the industrial process from the point of view of development of metallurgical industry. |
