The article reveals the role of engineering designer, a technologist in the innovation process of metallurgical industry development. It describes the experience of improving the training and education of professionals of the new formation: engineering designers - technologists, capable to work as a managers of the investment-constructional activities over the whole period of the project life cycle, and what is more, the work experience of the Institute of new materials and technologies of Urral Federal university named after the RF first President B.N. Eltsyn is also taken into account. As a result, the master’s education program has been corrected and added in order to expand knowledges of masters not only in their specialty, but also in adjacent professions.
