Solutions on optimizing heat recovery of mobile diesel power plants towards maximum utilization of heat of diesel engine to warm drilling rigs are presented, starting from heating drilling mud and production of process water from snow and ice and finishing with warming drill rig tower and comfortable temperature regime maintenance for drilling people. As a result of the theoretical calculations and practical experiments carried out, the authors managed to solve the optimization problem by adding the process layout of heat recovery units with: air flow shutter in the channels of the secondary heat source—air flow in air ducts from the cooling radiator and to the gas–air heat exchanger, three-way valves in the line of the primary heat source (exhaust gases) and the block of electric heaters in the duct behind the heat exchanger. The heating process has become independent from the diesel power plant load and maintenance of the working temperature regime of the diesel generator. The necessity of automatic control of the modernized heat recovery unit operation is determined. The tasks of the automatic control system are set. Standard situations (states) of every control and switching element of the proposed heat recovery unit are described, which, taken together, reflect each of the operating modes of the entire system. The automatic control architecture is proposed as the variable walk-down control loop with feedback. The operation of each control element is described in each preset operating mode—warm-up and actuation of diesel generator, heating of drilling rig building, maintenance of standard temperature conditions under varied drilling regimes, warm-up of drilling mud and in case of no need of heat supply.
