Abstract | Barely 10 % of haul roads in open pit mines in Yakutia have hard coating. The experience gained in operation of cement concrete topping on a spiral ramp road in Udachny OPM shows that this type surface is not always worthwhile in confine conditions of open pit kimberlite mines in Yakutia. It is most efficient to substitute cement concrete coating for modified asphalt concrete. Asphalt concrete ensures higher density, shear resistance, fracture toughness, wearability and roughness of road surface. Moreover, asphalt concrete features manufacturability and maintainability, which simplifies repair works and healing-up. A factor of no little significance is reliable gripping between asphalt concrete coating and machine tires, which is very important for road traffic safety. In the presented study, asphalt concrete was modified by rubber crumb and natural zeolite. Relatively low content of impurities, high heat stability and low cost of Yakutia’s zeolite-bearing rocks make natural zeolites a promising modifier for composites. Analysis of asphalt concrete characteristic shows that physical and mechanical properties of modified composites are higher than initial asphalt concrete has. It is observed that the strength, water resistance, heat endurance and freeze resistance grow while porosity and thermal sensitivity reduce. The modification to be efficient requires that haul road surfacing is implemented in compliance with all regulations of production procedures subject to agreement between the road topping structures, actual conditions of their operation, parameters of road construction machines, haul road characteristics and dump truck performance. |
