Abstract

The problem of replacing expensive primary materials – foundry and pig iron — and purchased cast iron and steel scrap in the charge for gas cupola smelting of cast iron by briquettes made of cast iron and steel shavings is considered. The use of such briquettes in the practice of cupola smelting of cast iron faces a number of difficulties. First of all, we are talking about the presence in the composition of the carbon-containing component of briquette materials (for example, the fight of graphite electrodes, coke or coal) sulfur impurities harmful to cast iron, as well as the insufficient mechanical strength of the briquettes and high crumbling, which complicate their transportation and storage for storage. The structural and functional analysis of the object of study is carried out, in which the briquette is selected. The possibility and feasibility of replacing the materials of each structural group of the briquette with alternative ones are minimized, minimizing the risk of cast iron contamination with sulfur impurities, providing sufficient mechanical strength and low crumbling of the briquette. It is proposed to include a spent wax-like model composition in the cast iron briquette smelting briquette, which due to its properties is able to successfully cope with the functions of heat supply for heating materials and melting (fuel), controlled carbonization of cast iron melt, as well as ensuring compactness and minimal crumbling and moisture saturation of the briquette. Practical testing in the conditions of the existing production confi rmed the validity of the theoretical assessment and showed that the use of such briquettes as part of the charge contributes to the intensifi cation of cupola melting and the reduction of harmful sulfur impurities in smelted cast iron.
