The article lists some basic and top-priority environmental and social issues in current storage of household waste in disposal fields. This is one of the global ecological challenges. A solution to this problem may be complete elimination of disposal fields meant piling and keeping the household waste. This way out is feasible in case of abidance to the effective waste management concept. The prime objective is the waste sorting to separate the refuse which is suitable for re-treatment or recycling, or which possess an energy potential. It is suggested to do elementary sorting at the household scale. A public opinion poll was conducted to clarify the point. The results of the poll prove people’s willingness to carry out elementary sorting. The second stage of the effective waste management can be processing of waste which is the resource for the industry or powergenerating sector. The public poll also revealed disbelief of people in the existing technologies of waste incineration and waste recycling. Irrespective of a selected waste conversion technology, the problem connected with disposal of processing residue and unreclaimable waste remains yet unsolved. This article addresses this problem solution. It is proposed to place such waste in mined-out voids in underground mines. In this case, both environmental and backfilling issues become resolved. The article describes the advantages of salt mines as burial sites for solid household waste. The proposed disposal technology suits the requirements of mines and enables solution to the environmental issues in a region. It is recommended to maintain mutually beneficial ecological and economic cooperation between a region and a mining company in the framework of a governmental environmental program.
