Abstract

The main areas of application of polymers in mineral mining are the strength improvement and damp proofing of rocks, water sealing of various-purpose structures, elimination of water ingresses during mine construction and operation, etc. The present period of mineral mining features great depths, complex interbedding of rocks in geological cross-section, occurrence of aquifers containing water of different chemical composition, variable temperature conditions, etc. In the meanwhile, most manufacturers of materials describe their behavior by indicators determined under condition of normal temperature and pressure on a laboratory scale. This complicates a well-founded choice of a material at a mine design stage due to the lack of the national or international experience of the material application in such conditions, which leads to emergency situations as a consequence. The only way to assess reliability and the claimed characteristics of a material is the laboratory research with modeling real-life conditions of use of this material. The article presents an approach to integrated laboratory research aimed to determine properties of chemical materials to be used in damp proofing of a vertical shaft planned in halogen strata under high-pressure aquifers at a depth of 800–1000 m. The scope of the research embraced determination of the mechanical properties required in geomechanical calculations and description of interaction of a test material with water. The research procedures for the mechanical properties of a chemical material and its interaction with rocks, lining and groundwater of different degree of mineralization are proposed. The research findings are described, and the conclusion on a significant effect of real-life geological conditions on the behavior of a material is made.
