Abstract | The coal industry of Russia is currently undergoing the impact of geopolitical, economic and social transformations. The transformations are actualized via a system of threats and challenges, which, in its turn, can lead to the catastrophic consequences. With a view to assessing aftereffects of the harmful impact caused by the geopolitical, economic and social transformations to the coal industry, the authors have analyzed and systematized global threats and challenges. The research used such methods as the analytical treatment of data, analysis and systematization of data, comparative and contrastive analysis, formulation of conclusions from the analysis of data bases, presentation of data using information technologies and visualization, classification and ranging of data, a priori modeling, development of different scenarios, etc. The implemented systematization of the main threats and challenges imposed on the coal industry shows that the threats necessitate application of certain counter-tactics, while the challenges, owing to their specificity, define a system of measures aimed to adapt the strategic sectors of economy to the new conditions of long-term development. At the heart of a long-term development strategy of the coal industry, there are such critical challenges as technological acceleration, energy transition and transfer from traditional to alternative energy sources, as well as decarbonization of the economy under the global climate agenda. The predicted coal production per fields and basins allows evaluating production cutback in the coal mining regions in Russia, which is usable both by coal mining companies and by agencies of government within the coal industry. |
