Abstract

The paper presents the results of comprehensive studies aimed at increasing the service life of bronze machine parts using electrocontact welding (ECW). The relevance of the work is associated with the need for import substitution and reduction of the costs of restoring and strengthening parts made of copper-based alloys. The study focused on specimens made of BrO5Ts5S5 bronze, with and without a coating consisting of a woven metal mesh made of St1kp steel (wire diameter: 0.4 mm; mesh size: 1.6 mm). The quality of the joint was preliminarily assessed using metallographic examination and computed tomography, which confirmed the absence of defects. Comparative tribometric wear-resistance tests were performed against a counterbody made of 45 steel heat-treated to a hardness of 48–50 HRC. The experiments demonstrated that, under these conditions, the coefficient of friction of the bronze in its initial state was 1.27 times lower than that of the woven metal mesh coating produced by ECW onto the bronze. This difference is attributed to the distinct physical and mechanical properties of the materials constituting the friction pair. It was shown that the wear of the woven metal mesh coating produced by ECW onto the bronze was 3.3 times lower than the wear of the bronze in its initial state against the 45 steel counterbody. It was established that the wear factor of the woven metal mesh coating produced by ECW onto the bronze was 3.7 times lower than that of the bronze in its initial state under friction against the 45 steel counterbody. The results demonstrate the high efficiency of this technology for restoring parts made of copper-based alloys, providing an increased service life while reducing repair costs to 20–30% of the price of a new part.
