Abstract

The transition of JSC Kola MMC to the production of High Purity grade cathode nickel required the introduction of an additional sorption treatment stage to remove trace zinc impurities from process solutions. Optimizing this technology requires a detailed assessment of the effects of solution composition and temperature on the sorption properties of the selected AMP-p anion-exchange resin. The effects of temperature on the kinetic, capacity, and selectivity characteristics of the strongly basic AMP-p anion-exchange resin have been investigated during the removal of zinc (II), lead (II), and iron (III) impurity ions from a chloride-sulfate nickel solution. The effect of chloride-ion concentration on the equilibrium sorption parameters has also been examined. The experiments have been conducted at temperatures of 20–60°C and chloride-ion concentrations of 55–80 g/dm3, with a nickel concentration in the solution of 65–75 g/dm3. The equilibrium sorption of zinc (II) has been mathematically described using the Freundlich model. Zinc (II) sorption has been found to be exothermic, as evidenced by a decrease in the sorption equilibrium constants and the zinc (II) sorption capacity of the AMP-p anion-exchange resin as the temperature has increased from 20 to 60°C. An increase in temperature from 40 to 60°C reduces the sorption capacity of the anion-exchange resin for lead (II), whereas iron (III) extraction within this temperature range is practically temperature-independent. The pronounced concave shapes of the obtained iron (III) and lead (II) sorption isotherms indicate that deep removal of these impurities from the solution during the sorption treatment stage is unlikely to be achieved. Increasing the chloride-ion concentration from 55 to 80 g/dm3 enhances the zinc (II) sorption capacity of the anion-exchange resin at 40°C. However, at 60°C, the effect of the chloride background becomes negligible, and the zinc (II) sorption capacity remains stable across the entire range of chloride-ion concentrations.
