In electric steelmaking, one of the biggest levers on energy and raw materials consumption as well as emissions is the electric arc furnace. In cooperation with Lech-Stahlwerke GmbH, a foaming slag manager was developed using structure-borne sound measurement. It qualitatively determines the slag height and its distribution between electric arc and wall panels and automatically controls the injection of the appropriate amount of carbon into predefined areas of the furnace.
