The new scientific direction — physics of rocks and mining processes — has been created in 1960ies, developed in the next decades and described in this paper. The physical-technical faculty preparing the mining physical engineers has been established in the Moscow mining institute in order to provide the new scientific area with specialists. At present time, physical-technical faculty prepares high-skilled specialists in five different directions.
