Abstract

The paper outlines the basic technologies developed at ICTREMRM KSC RAS aimed at extracting rare-earth metal (REM) concentrates from middlings and wastes of the Khibiny apatite concentrate (KAC) sulphuric-acid process, including phosphosemihydrate and phospho dehydrate, extractive phosphoric acid from the dehydration process. Middlings of the KAC nitric acid process, representing a frozen-out nitricphosphoric acid extract, have been also considered. The technologies provide a comprehensive non-waste processing of phosphogypsum of both current production and accumulated in tailing dumps. They are essentially compatible with all processes turning out mineral fertilizers. Moreover, they were cost-effective even in the period preceding nowadays with its abruptly rising prices for REM products. A part of the methods can be employed for the processing of stored phosphogypsum dumps. Particular attention was paid to methods of sorption recovery of rare-earth metals. Their use can significantly increase the production of the most valuable rare-earth metals, including yttrium and intermediate and heavy-weight groups of rare metals. In the near future, the bulk of Russia’s production of REM, particularly of the middle and yttrium group, is expected to come from apatite concentrate, with a production volume not only meeting the industry’s demand in Russia but also affording its export.
