Abstract

Generalized results of investigations have shown that usage of additional copper coating via cooling of wire rod after diffusion brass coating in the bath with 3–10 g/l of CuSO4·5H2O water solution will lead to the below-mentioned following positive effects. Firstly, uniformity of copper distribution across thickness of brass coating increases. Secondly, copper concentration on the surface of brass coating rises in acceptable range what guarantees lack of brass β-phase on the surface of brass-coated billet being in contact with the die work area during drawing. Respectively, it improves brass ductile properties and decreases the contact friction ratio in drawing, as well as lowers drawing temperature, making possible to improve wire ductility. Thirdly, drawing of steel brass-coated wire obtained with additional copper coating provides improvement of its ductile properties; the number of reverse twistings by 50% and twisting of 2 wire strings by 2% for 0.3 mm diameter wire increases. Fourthly, adhesion properties of steel wire cord to rubber increase in average by 10%, while other wire properties have not essential changes. The following effects should have been observed additionally: lowering of drawing force at drawing mills, increase of service life of drawing tools, lack of copper addition during removal of brass coating in drawing.
