The technologies of development and manufacture of highstrength steels applied in shipbuilding are generalized and analyzed in this article. The analysis of their chemical composition, mechanical and other service properties, their tendency to brittle destruction is presented. The influence of the alloying elements and modes of heat and thermomechanical treatment on physical and mechanical properties of high-strength steel is shown. The passed investigations have displayed that usage of up-to-date metallurgical and casting technologies, such as accelerated cooling during solidification of cast billets, steel refining and vacuum processing, can be considered as the most important directions of quality improvement for responsible components of special usage. It is concluded that mechanical and service properties of high-strength shipbuilding steels mostly depend on ductility and homogeneity of metal structure that can be achieved via optimal chemical composition, heat treatment and plastic deformation conditions. In general, the new generation of such steels has lower alloying level by 10-20 % (comparing with previously developed steels) in combination with micro-alloying by vanadium or niobium and providing of nano-structures.
