Abstract | Aimed to exploit economical and technological advantages of international cooperation in mining and geological sector of economy, the CIS Executive Committee in partnership with the leading scientists and experts initiated and elaborated the Mining Charter and the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Research, Exploration and Use of Mineral Resources of CIS Countries. On May 27, 1997, the both documents were signed by the chief executives of the Republic of Armenia, Republic of Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Republic of Tajikistan and Ukraine. Based on the Agreement, the Intergovernmental Council on Exploration, Use and Conservation of Mineral Resources was formed (hereinafter, Intergovernmental Council). In April 1998, under the auspices of the CIS International Economical Committee, Intergovernmental Council Session I was held and accentuated its basic areas of activity in terms of legislation and regulation, scientific and technological cooperation and investment operations. Since then, the Intergovernmental Council has held 18 sessions devoted to discussions of current issues of cooperation, analysis of implementation of joint projects and setting of tasks and objectives for the next periods of time. Expansion of the Intergovernmental Council activities escalated the issue of quality information service to be offered by the Council to mining business in CIS countries. A helping hand was incidentally given by the Mining Journal, the world’s oldest publication on mining. The Journal, far from political predilections and estimates, became a convenient informative ground for all CIS countries. Under sponsorship of the Intergovernmental Council, the Mining Journal entered upon publication of subject issues on mining industries in CIS countries. Since 2001 up to 2004, the issues devoted to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Belarus, Russia, Tajikistan and Georgia came off the press one by one. The Mining Journal activity in the field of strengthening of economic cooperation between CIS countries were highly merited by the mining community of the CIS, and Intergovernmental Council Session VII in Tbilisi in 2004 gave the Journal the status of the main publication of the Council. Being in this status, the Journal published the issue on the Ukrainian mining industry. |
