Abstract

Сonditions in steel mills are rough and very challenging for technical equipment. Roller tables drive systems, for example, are continuously exposed to severe stress including violent jolts. Only very resilient units ensure that semi-finished products weighing several tons are reliably transported from one stage of production to the next. As part of a large new steelworks complex, a new heavy section rolling mill went into operation on the desert island of Bahrain. Mini-mill in Hidd is supplied on turnkey basis by SMS Concast and SMS Meer. It includes 120-t electric arc furnace and ladle furnace; DRI is used as raw material. This shop is also supplied by dust removal unit with capacity more than 2.2 mln. m3/h. 4-strand continuous casting machine with productivity 850,000 tpy provides the rolling mill with billets and beam blanks with cross section up to 680x350x100 mm. The most part of driving systems has been supplied by Nord Drivesystems company that is a permanent partner of SMS Meer. It is underlined that Nord Drivesystems company, otherwise that other drive systems manufacturers, equipped all models of its industrial drives with one-piece shells, including the most powerful drive with exit torque up to 242,000 Nm; it allows to eliminate the twisting effect under large load.
