The current methods of ventilation planning and design for coal mines are reviewed with the focus on sequence of mine ventilation planning and design, approaches to predicting gas release in roadways, selection of ventilation circuits for production areas and dead entries, procedures to calculate air flow in roadways and other parameters. In the course of operation of a coal mine, some factors may arise, which are omitted in the regulatory documents, and supplementary recommendations are to be made to select and validate ventilation schemes for roadways. One of such factors is the use of different production and transport machines with diesel-engine drives. Operation of such machines is associated with extra exhaust gases containing contaminating and toxic substances in mine air and with oxygen consumption by combustion engines. Pollution of mine air with exhaust of diesel transport machines is analyzed in the article, and it is concluded that coal mine ventilation planning and design should account for the emission of toxic and contaminating substances of exhaust gases in mine air and also for the consumption of oxygen by combustion engines. Air consumption by operating diesel combustion engines is calculated.
