Abstract | Opencast mining flow charts, for instance, in gold open pit mines, widely employ circulation water treatment tanks. Contaminated process water is treated in the tanks by gravity and physicochemical methods which fail to ensure sufficient clearing up to sanitary standards. One of additional methods of advanced treatment of contaminated water is mechanical separation of solid and liquid phases on filtering machines. This article presents the research results on mechanical treatment of contaminated mine water on filtering machines using fibrous polymeric materials obtained by needle-punching and thermal bonding. The theoretical and experimental studies determined the dynamic characteristics, including filtering velocity and time, filtrate volume and rate of removal of suspended matter from water. The researchers show that the combination control of solid/liquid separation can ensure high rate of removal of suspended matter from contaminated water, which increases extraction of valuable components, e.g. placer gold in sand washing, and decreases contamination of natural water by water discharge from the tanks. It is found that the most efficient is the cartridge arrangement of filtering materials as it allows rapid replacement of contaminated filter partitions, as well as their regeneration and recovery. The use of the cartridge filters with filtering fibrous materials in different combinations improves economic efficiency and ecological safety of mining. |
