Tsvetnye Metally

A majority of the articles published in the May issue of the journal of "Tsvetnye metally" (No. 6. 2018) are dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Center for Engineering Support of Production of the Polar Division (PD) of Norilsk Nickel MMC. The authors report on the unique technological solutions, the developments that cover the whole wide range of mining and metallurgical activities of the plant. As far as the enrichment topic is concerned, the readers find the articles on the development of the ore preparation complex with the introduction of the semiautogenous grinding process, on the introduction of the technology for the enrichment of charge of rich and cuprous ore, on the reconstruction of the condensation section of Talnakh concentrator (TC). The metallurgy section provides articles on the development and implementation of technical solutions that ensure the compliance of the quality of cathode copper of PD to the requirements of the London Metal Exchange, on the processing of electrolytic copper sludges, on the improvement of the technology for obtaining iridium concentrate, and on the hydrometallurgical processing of technogenic materials of the TC. Moreover, the results of the investigations of factors affecting the NiO reduction process and the kinetics of the copper carburization process with active nickel powder are presented.

The subject of the next articles of the journal covers the traditional sections, such as enrichment and heavy non-ferrous metals. The authors from the Magnitogorsk State Technical University named after G. I. Nosov and the Institute of Problems of Integrated Development of the Subsoil Resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences report on the development of a principal technological scheme for processing the stale tailings of flotation of copper-zinc ores of JSC Uchalinskiy MMC with the aim of reducing precious metals. The scheme includes a two-step thermal treatment with ammonium chloride and its mixture with ammonium nitrate. The authors note that the proposed technology is resource-replicating, since it allows not only to extract gold, silver and iron from stale tails, but also to use recycled wastes as filling mixes for mining operations.

In the article of "The practice of using tuyeres in a protective layer in copper converting", the authors report on the development and implementatin of new tuyeres at the Yujuralnikel Combinate. The possibility of using such tuyeres not only for nickel and copper, but also for copper-nickel converters is shown for any enrichment of the blast with oxygen. In this case, the conversion campaign can be extended if there are enough cold additives.
